The quality of water produced from drilled wells in Maine is generally excellent. However, the water from a small percentage of wells produce sediment, staining, discoloration, taste and odor, which is generally caused by elevated levels of iron, manganese, sulfur or calcium carbonate hardness.

Is your Water Safe to Drink?

Did you know that unlike municipal water systems, there are no state or federal quality or safety requirements for private well water? Town water is tested frequently and meets regulated health standards. When it comes to private well water, however, you are on your own, but there are simple things you can do to ensure that your well water is free of contaminants.

Has the quality of your water ever been tested? Before you panic, know that most drilled water wells in Maine provide safe and delicious drinking water. Only a small percentage contains bacteria, arsenic, nitrate, nitrite, radon, lead, or uranium, which are harmful to your health. If your well water has never been tested, consider having it done. The most harmful contaminants are colorless, odorless and tasteless; a test is the only way to know for sure if they are present. Likewise, if your water has been tested in the past, but you notice a change in its appearance or taste, a retest is advisable.
